Hamilton met the editor of Garden News by chance in 1970 and began to write a regular column for what was to become the top-selling weekly gardening magazine. He joined the staff in 1975 and the next year was appointed editor of Practical Gardening, the leading monthly magazine. As well as presenting Gardeners' World, Hamilton made several other television series, including Geoff Hamilton's Cottage Gardens. He continued to write for gardening magazines, and his family ran a nursery and garden centre. When the panel from Gardeners' Question Time defected from Radio 4 to Classic FM, Hamilton appealed to both channels to 'resist playing silly games with us by scheduling the two programmes at the same time'. But he was firm in his defence of a younger generation of garden expert: 'My doctor, for example, looks about 15, but I have every confidence in him.' Hamilton disliked politicians, frozen food and chemicals.
He supported environmentalism and tended towards socialism politically. He enjoyed choral singing and felt that he benefited doubly from cycling - through exercise and by avoiding driving a car. It was during a bicycle ride for charity, however, that he died. Hamilton's life as a gardener informed his world view: 'Gardening tends to give a person a rather fatalistic idea of life.
Silent wings keygen torrent. You have a bad year and you are sure the next will be better. When it isn't, you begin to realise how insignificant you are in the enormous machine of nature.' Asked once what he would like for his epitaph, he said: 'A little sign that says: Cercidiphyllum japonicum. It is the name of the tree I want planted over me.'
Hamilton was twice married. He had three children.
