This particular title is a first person shooter (FPS) where you are in command of a crack squad moving deep into Vietcong territory on various missions. Vietcong: Purple Haze isn't the most inspired FPS in truth its a bit clumsy. For a theme with such great background, history and notoriety this Vietnam game has no atmosphere at all.
The developers who made this game want to go away and watch the film 'Platoon' to see what Vietnam was all about. The one thing that is spot on is the Drill Seargent in tutorial mode where he is the spitting image of the bloke out that other great Vietnam movie 'Full Metal Jacket' and he's got all the. Colourful language too, so don't screw up he's a right son of a gun. The game itself is clumsy and just too slow, when moving around to the next target, your men continually bump into each other, they forget there commands too quickly and get stuck behind trees and rocks, which renders them useless when under attack from the enemy. The missions incorporate stealth, attack, rescue, track and destroy to name a few.
The modes available to you are single plaayer campaign and quick fight and basically thats it. Theres no online gaming like on Xbox and PC. In Single Player Campaign you open up new weapons and missions if you succeed in your particular mission. The controls are also clumsy where your movements like drp, crouch and pron positions are over done and aren't very slick and jumping is over the top but the lean function is useful, being able to lean left or right. The trouble with the concept of controlling your squad is that they are basically stupid and they don't recognise danger quick enough even when told there is a bomb about to blow, they will just run around bumping into each other.
Even with the sheer lack of care and attention to detail and your squad having the combined IQ of a monkey on steroids, I still got into the game and quite enjoyed it (I must of been drunk at the time). For those of you who have been waiting for a great game based on the Vietnam war you'll have to keep on waiting I'm afraid.
